Oral Motor or Oral Sensory Skills

Oral motor or oral sensory skills are how we control the movements in the face and oral areas. Depending on the age and progression with key milestones, we can tell by the way children eat if they are having challenges with oral movements. A child may be experiencing difficulties if they chew food in front of the mouth rather than on the molars, or have difficulty using a cup or a straw. If a baby loses excessive liquid from their lips when bottle or breast feeding, or has lengthy bottle or breast feedings, he or she may also be experiencing challenges with oral motor/sensory skill development.
